Before the Pix tackles some football for the final installment of the 2012-2013 season, Pix has some Ranting to do:
First of all, Pix would like pay his respects to former NYC mayor Ed Koch, who passed away yesterday. Sports and politics often intersect, as the two topics have here in the past. Koch was a Jewish democrat who endorsed the presidential candidacies of both Reagan and George HW Bush. A quotation of his which should embarrass all uber partisan dipshits on both sides of the aisle is this, "If you agree with me on 9 out of 12 issues, you should vote for me. If you agree with me on 12 out of 12 issues, you should see a psychiatrist." Pix can only imagine how Ed Koch would have lamented the current state of affairs both in DC and in the intellectual black hole that is Fox news. ( And yes, MSNBC, or LGBTV as some would call it is partisan as well, but Puh-leeze.....don't compare the two).
Ed Koch was post partisan (and post racial, but we'll get to that) before the phrase appeared to even be necessary. R.I.P. Eddie. Best Mayor maybe in history of the country.
Now for something completely different and very non PC. There has been much discussion in the media recently and this morning in particular (see ESPN article) on the lack of minority coaching hiring in the NFL. Serial hypocrite and fraud Mahatma Dungy is crying about the apparent failure of the 2003 Rooney rule. For those unfamiliar with this reasonable idea, it says that before a NFL head coach is hired, at least one minority candidate has to be interviewed. Pix has no problem with this per se, although it does somewhat reek of 1960's affirmative action run amok..... particularly since we are talking about private companies and not state run institutions, but lets for now say the Rooney rule, at the time, made sense because there was indeed a disproportionate number of minority coaches relative to the number of players in the league...or better yet, the population in general. Sorry for the run on sentence, mom. But just a few seasons ago, a full third of head coaches in the NFL were minorities. Should we have instituted a honkey rule? Maybe call it the Archie Bunker rule? Isn't 33% out of proportion with the population? But that's not good enough for ex-coaches and would be pundits like Herm Edwards and Dungy. Should black coaches even be allowed to be fired? Maybe we should cap the number of white fans per game, as they surely make up a disproportionate number of people in the stands in a typical NFL stadium. And yes, Pix is using the words black and white because African American is too long to type and white people aren't white anyways. The ones I know are mostly pink, or beige, or tope (ish) and definitely splotchy this time of year. Let's face it, our skin is terrible (Spoiler alert, Pix is white). Moving on.......partly what inspired Pix to hit this subject this am is that Ed Koch inspired New York city to enter not only a post partisan era, but more importantly a post racial era. After Jesse Jackson called NYC "Hymie-town", it was Koch who bailed him out on Saturday Night Live.
The NFL, and professional sports in general, is the ultimate meritocracy and is in no need of affirmative action. The notion that owners would hire coaches under any criteria whatsoever other than their ability to WIN is absurd, insulting, juvenile and, well, really whiny. And most of all, highly unprofitable. Money kind of sort of matters a little in the NFL. Dungy of all people should know that.
As a nation of roughly 80% white voters we have elected a "minority" president twice. Are we completely post racial? Of course not. But it's not helping society become post racial when ridiculous notions like the Rooney rule are discussed. You want fairness in hiring Tony Dungy? Real fairness? Punt the Rooney rule altogether. Pix seriously doubts black coaches like Kevin Sumlin get hired in places like Texas A&M if there's a huge minority coach hiring problem holding back qualified candidates. You win, you keep your job. You lose, you lose it. Just ask Norv Turner, Andy Reid, Chan Gaily, Fritz Shurmur, Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Mularkey. Those are the six white NFL coaches fired vs. Lovie and Romeo. 6-2. RAYCEZM!
Phew...., ok, settling down while Pix sips a nice cold glass of un-sweetened ice tea on the Pix plantation.
Here's the thing, the Pix doesn't really want to write about deer antler drinking god's favorite double murderer anti- gay bigot father of 6 with 4 different birds Ray Lewis. Clearly, god likes the man. Not sure why god made Baltimore into America's biggest shit hole or what he has against the Orioles, but he obviously likes Ray. Really, really likes Ray. But even god isn't as all powerful and all knowing as the GURU. So it leaves the Pix to ponder....wondering about HIS plan? And yeah, verily, it came to the Pix in a vision this week while sipping Blue Moons and watching the Bruins dominate their first few games. The GURU has bigger things in store for the Patriots than schlepping back to New Orleans and win, yawn, another championship there.
The ALMIGHTY BELICHICK has bigger plans. According to the vision, a dying Ed Koch's last wish was for The GURU and his son, BRADY, to purify the city of New York by winning the Super Bowl on the home turf of the Jets and Va-giants. Only then can the country be united in a post-racial-post-partisan world. It has been written. Let it be so.....
Thanks to all the readers for following the Pix this year. The Pix will be back, The Pats will be back. See you next season,
Pix Out
